Overview

The Horsetail Rush, a hardy water-loving plant also known as the Scouring Rush, is one of the oldest plants to be used by man. In addition to ornamental landscape use, the Horsetail Rush is still employed today for homeopathic purposes as well as a mechanical abrasive to polish or scour surfaces.

The Horsetail Rush is a durable plant that reaches heights of 4 feet or more. It has jointed, hollow stems that are furrowed and green with black bands that give it an attractive bamboo-like appearance. The upright growth habit of the Horsetail Rush breaks up monotonous planting schemes with a fantastic vertical architectural presence. For this reason, the Horsetail Rush is a popular plant choice in modern landscape design. The Horsetail Rush is an excellent accent plant that complements pond rockwork and other hardscape. It can also be strategically planted as a screen to obscure views or pond equipment.

The Horsetail Rush is generally easy to keep in wet conditions planted immersed in water or at the water's edge under partial shade or in full sun conditions. To maintain a neat appearance or to contain excess growth, pot the Horsetail Rush in a 1 to 2-gallon planting container and set the planter in your pond so it is covered by up to 2 inches of water. Dense patches of the Horsetail Rush can be employed to help control pond shoreline erosion.

While the bulk of the plant remains green year-round, be sure to remove old stems that have browned, died, and dried out to maintain best plant appearance. Keep in mind that the Horsetail Rush can become an aggressive spreader when planted in soil near a pond or stream. Zones 4-11.

Customer Testimonials

Melanie Obendorfer Cypress , TX
I bought one last year and put it next to my pond. It definitely can be invasive and hard to get rid of. I have new growth popping up all over the place but I think this gives the pond a great look!
