Overview

The Betta is without a doubt, one of the most popular freshwater tropical fish. And it is easy to see why. The Betta is, first and foremost, brightly colored in shades of vibrant hues unparalleled among freshwater fish. Second, this member of the Belontiidae family is hardy when kept in ideal water parameters. Finally, despite their seemingly delicate beauty, Betta splendens requires simple care, which makes them a favorite of both beginning and advanced hobbyists.

Betta splendens is often referred to as Fighting Fish or "Siamese" Fighting Fish, since it has been bred over the years to be both colorful and combative, especially towards other males. As such, only one male Betta should be kept in an aquarium. However, smaller, shorter-finned - though often equally as colorful - females may be housed together with caution. The Betta should be housed with peaceful fish that will not nip at the Betta's glorious, flowing fins.

An ideal environment for the Betta is a well-filtered aquarium that holds a steady temperature of between 75° and 86°F. For best care, Betta splendens should be kept singly in aquariums of at least 1/4 gallon. It also prefers a variety of hiding places amongst the foliage of freshwater plants. Therefore, having an appropriately-sized aquarium with a filter and heater is essential for the proper care of these otherwise hardy and colorful freshwater aquarium fish.

The Betta can be bred in the home aquarium. For breeding purposes, males and females can be temporarily housed together. Once laid by the female, the eggs are placed inside a bubblenest and tended by the male Betta. Fry appear in about 24 hours and must be fed very small food initially, such as crushed or powdered flakes and newly hatched brine shrimp. Fry will also take finely chopped hard-boiled egg yolk

Provide the Betta with a carnivore diet consisting of a quality flake food, frozen or freeze dried bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Female bettas are some of the most beautiful and graceful fish in the aquarium that I have ever had. I highly recommend them to the beginner with their first community tank as they are EXTREMELY hardy in my experience. Also, do not overlook them because they do not have the elongated finnage of the males. they come in just as many colors and are sometimes more brilliantly colored than the males. Overall, I would have to say that female bettas rank among the best in freshwater community aquarium fish.

I recommend female Bettas to anyone that wants to keeps tropical fish. I have been keeping several female Bettas together for several years in a 29 gallon tank. I love the variety of beautiful colors and fin styles the girls have to offer. Not quite as magnificent as a male Betta, but you can keep lots of girls together. I now have a 45 gallon tank full of female Bettas. You need to purchase and add at least three at a time, because they will establish a pecking order and there may be little skirmishes until an alpha is established. Do not keep two - two will tangle as they vie for the alpha position. They are smart, active and have character. If you provide them with caves, ornaments and plants, they will swim in all areas of the aquarium. They will swim in and out of the caves and around and through the plants and ornaments and be fun to watch. They also love to play in the bubbles if you have an air stone set on low. This is a constant source of play for the girls. They are inquisitive and like to explore their tank. I recommend real plants because artificial ones (with rough edges) can damage their fins because of their antics. They are a joy and I have had Tetras, Barbs and Cichlids, but I am happiest with the female Bettas. I have always kept one male Betta in the same tank and have never had a problem. there too many girls for him to get any ideas. I have floating plants and they all nestle together (packed in like sardines) under the floating plants to sleep.

This is a wonderful fish to add to your aquarium. It's easy to maintain and looks great.

Female Bettas may not have the long fins of males, but they're still beautiful. Just don't make the mistake of keeping one male with one female for prolonged periods of time. If you want to breed them, separate them soon after breeding. In my experience, one male and two or more females will be fine together, given enough space. Of course, the females get along wonderfully with one another.

I added her to my small community tank. She is very peaceful and a beautiful addition to my aquarium.

My female betta is a beautiful fish - very active and inquisitive. I have her in a one gallon that is heated, filtered and planted - she is by herself but keeps busy exploring her tank. Frequent water changes and regular monitoring of water quality are essential - one cycled a small tank is stable but nitrates will build up if the water isn't changed.

First off I am super happy with what I got. I ordered 10 females at the same time. They were all around the same size so that wasn't a problem there was a little fighting but has since calmed down. I waited a month before writing this to see if they would die off but no all super healthy and different colors. They are very active and curious. The girls have started to come up to the front when they see me standing close thinking every time I am there to feed them. Which makes it great for when kids come over because they are a lot less boring than they think. I would buy fish from here again and have since made an username with them for the rewards. I am new to fish keeping about a year in so never order fish offline before. Not worried about doing it again !
