Overview
The Nerite Turbo Snail Nerita polita is also known as the Nerite Algae Snail or Polished Nerite Snail. It boosts a turban-shaped shell that has a mottled brown and white appearance. When adding this snail to your aquarium, use the drip method of acclimation. They are wonderful scavengers and only grow to 1 ½”, so rarely knock over rocks or corals in the aquarium.
Requiring stable water parameters, it is sensitive to high levels of copper-based medications and will not tolerate high nitrate levels. Usually burying itself in sand during the day, it appears at night to graze on algae found on rocks. The aquarium it lives in should include a lid. One to two snails for each 10 gallons of water will provide it enough room to roam and help keep algae under control.
This member of the Neritidae is particularly fond of hair algae. Keep in mind that that algae eaters will starve if algae levels become sparse. Therefore, its diet should be supplemented with dried seaweed or a vegetable-based tablet food.
