Overview

Experience a rainbow of color with the hardy Chrysantha Water Lily Plant. Developed in 1905 by Joseph B.L. Marliac, the Chrysantha Water Lily Plant is a hardy changeable water lily. As its name implies, changeable water lilies produce blooms that change colors providing a different viewing experience depending on the age of the blossoms. The petite cup-shaped flowers of the Chrysantha Water Lily Plant often start off creamy-yellow then develop a blush of orange that deepens in color each day. The Chrysantha Water Lily is a prolific bloomer that produces a profusion of blossoms throughout the course of the pond season – from early summer and late into autumn. The hardy Chrysantha Water Lily is relatively easy to grow with a compact growth habit, making it a great water lily for smaller ponds and water gardens as well as container water gardens.

Even when it's not in bloom, the Chrysantha Water Lily provides fantastic visual interest with its ornamental, saucer-like leaves or "pads." The color of the leaves will vary considerably depending on its age but are typically bright green in coloration with purple flecks. Typical of hardy water lilies, the Chrysantha Water Lily produces round leaves with smooth edges. The leaf spread (or the amount of water surface area covered by the leaves) is approximately 2 to 3 ft providing much needed shade and protection for your pond fish, as well as a potential spawning site for pondlife.

The Chrysantha Water Lily should be potted in a two-gallon or larger planting container. To help your newly potted water lily establish itself faster in your pond, place the water lily at an initial depth of six inches below the water surface. As the water lily grows, it can be gradually lowered to its ideal depth of 12-18 inches below the water surface. The Chrysantha Water Lily can thrive under a wide variety of light conditions and does well in partial shade or sunny conditions where it receives up to six or more hours of direct sunlight. Unlike many other water lilies, the Chrysantha Water Lily tends to bloom better in cooler, shadier conditions. Zones 4-11.

LiveAquaria® offers two groups of Water Lilies: Tropical Water Lilies that thrive in plant hardiness zones 9-11 and Hardy Water Lilies that thrive in plant hardiness zones 4-11. Be sure to select water lily varieties the are hardy to your zone to enjoy long-lasting beauty.
