Overview

The Purple Anthelia Coral is a lovely "must-have" soft coral with many desirable traits. It's gorgeous purple coloration and ease-of-care makes it an attractive addition for both novice and experienced reef keepers. Despite its floral appearance, the Purple Anthelia Coral, also referred to as a Waving Hand or Glove Coral, is a colonial animal comprised of multiple individual polyps that can be easily propagated into multiple new fragments. The Purple Anthelia Coral have distinct eight-leaved tentacles associated with all members of this family.

The Purple Anthelia Coral is not difficult to maintain if provided moderate to high lighting conditions combined with moderate to strong water movement. The Purple Anthelia Coral will grow rapidly in the established reef aquarium by encrusting over adjacent rock work or even other corals. Keep in mind that predatory fish, crabs, snails, or the stings of other corals may damage the colony. Therefore, provide adequate space between them and sessile animals, especially other types of soft corals.

The Purple Anthelia Coral will thrive in a variety of lighting conditions, ranging from power compacts, T-5s, powerful LEDs and up to the more intense metal halides. The symbiotic algae zooxanthellae hosted within the body provides the Purple Anthelia Coral with the majority of its nutritional requirements through photosynthesis. For continued good health, the Purple Anthelia Coral will also require the addition of iodine and other trace elements to the water. Additional weekly feedings of micro-plankton or foods designed for filter feeding invertebrates will be appreciated.
