About Angelfish
"Angelfish" is a common name used to describe a variety of different species of both freshwater and saltwater (marine) ornamental fish popular among aquarium hobbyists. Members of freshwater angelfish belong to the genus Pterophyllum while marine angelfish belong to the family Pomacanthidae.
The genus Pterophyllum is represented by only three species of freshwater angelfish but through selective breeding, aquarium fish breeders developed countless color and fin varieties of Pterophyllum scalare including notable varieties such as Black Angelfish, Blue Angelfish, Half Black Angelfish, Marble Angelfish, and Veil Tail Angelfish.
In contrast, Marine Angelfish of the family Pomacanthidae are well represented with roughly 88 scientifically described species spanning 8 genera. For convenience sake, Marine Angelfish are commonly grouped into two categories based on relative size, regardless of genus, to help aquarium hobbyists select species best suited for their aquariums.
The two categories of Marine Angelfish are Large Marine Angelfish and Dwarf, or Pygmy Marine Angelfish. Keep in mind that Marine Angelfish withing these two categories vary greatly in temperament, diet, housing and care requirement so it is best to research the particular care requirement of each species you are interested to ensure compatibility and ultimately a successful aquarium hobby!
