Overview

The Black Gamecock Iris is a cultivated color variety of the Louisiana Iris. As its name implies, this beautiful iris is native to the state of Louisiana and bordering states in the southern US. Naturally occurring in wetlands, bogs, ditches, and any other areas with moist or damp soils, the Black Gamecock Iris is perfectly at home in most pond or water garden environments. The Black Gamecock Iris produces large, showy flowers up to 6 inches across displaying a captivating deep purple/black coloration. The slender sword-like foliage can grow as tall as 3 ft and injects a sleek architectural element to the pond landscape. The Black Gamecock Iris has a spread of 24-36", making it a fantastic plant to grow en masse for a dramatic presentation.

The Black Gamecock Iris thrives when grown in full sun and in slightly acidic soil. Pot the Black Gamecock Iris in a 5-gallon planting container and set the planter in your pond or water garden. Make sure the crown of the plant is covered by at least 3 inches of water. While the Black Gamecock Iris thrives in full sun conditions, it will tolerate partial shade. The Black Gamecock Iris is not cold tolerant and must be over-wintered indoors in areas that experience freezing winters. To ensure vigorous growth, divide and repot your Black Gamecock Iris every pond season as necessary. Zones 5-11.
