Overview

Sagittaria montevidensis, also known as the Spongy Arrowhead, Hooded Arrowhead, Long-lobed Arrowhead, Mississippi Arrowhead, Giant Arrowhead or Aztec Arrowhead, is an easy-to-care-for tropical marginal plant prized by water gardeners for its attractive foliage and flowers. As its common name suggests, Sagittaria montevidensis produces large arrowhead-shaped leaves that are held above the water upon rigid stalks. This architectural presentation is reinforced by tall floral spikes decorated with dainty white flowers that at first glance, resemble orchid flowers.

The flowers of Sagittaria montevidensis bloom all season long and feature a bright yellow center and a large burgundy eye spot at the base of each petal. The pollinated flowers produce fruit with a prolific amount of seeds that help the plant spread in the wild. To propagate Sagittaria montevidensis, gather the seeds and plant them in a seed flat filled with moist planting media. Once the seeds have sprouted, be sure to keep the crowns of the seedlings submerged under water.

Sagittaria montevidensis can be planted at the water's edge, or immersed in water, under partial shade or in full sun conditions. For best care pot the Sagittaria montevidensis in a 2-gallon or larger planting container and set the planter in your pond so it is covered by up to 6 inches of water. This ornamental plant can get as tall as 48" and may have a spread of up to 18". Sagittaria montevidensis is not cold tolerant and must be over-wintered indoors in areas that experience freezing winters. Zones 7-11.
