Overview

Enjoy a full season of lush foliage and flamboyant flowers with the Pickerel Rush Plant. This hardy marginal plant is a true workhorse that reliably produces beautiful blooms and attractive architectural foliage with minimal effort on your part. The Pickerel Rush Plant (also known as Pickerel Weed, Pickerelweed, and Wampee) is named in honor of the Italian botanist, Giulio Pontedera and is one of the most popular plant among pond keepers, water gardeners, and container water gardeners for its ease of care.

The Pickerel Rush Plant produces elongated heart- or spear-shaped foliage that beautifully accentuates its upright growth habit. From midsummer through late autumn, the Pickerel Rush Plant produces dramatic floral clusters showcased upon tall floral spikes. The bottle-brush-like floral clusters are a lovely lavender purple coloration that "pops" against the bright green coloration of the foliage. The Pickerel Rush Plant typically reaches a height of 18 to 24" but can grow larger depending on the growing conditions.

The Pickerel Rush Plant is a hardy plant that can be located at the water's edge or immersed in water under partial shade or in full sun conditions. The Pickerel Rush Plant exhibits a spreading growth habit that can form an impressive drift when planted en masse. Dense patches of the Pickerel Rush Plant can be employed to help control pond shoreline erosion. To maintain a neat appearance or to contain excess growth, pot the Pickerel Rush Plant in a 5-gallon or larger planting container and set the planter in your pond so it is covered by up to 1 to 6 inches of water. Divide the and repot Pickerel Rush Plant to ensure vigorous growth and blooms. New plants may be started from fresh seeds collected in late summer. Zones 4-11.
